Motor scooters conquered our roads in the late 1940s and early 1950s, none more so than the legendary Piaggo Vespa and the Lambretta from Milan. Recognising the sign of the times, the AMAG repair shop in Schinznach-Bad, Switzerland, began making the ami scooter in 1949. The ami shot to popularity thanks to its small wheels, large petrol tank, vivid red, green or blue paintwork, and 98 cc engine. By the end of 1952, some 100 ami sales representatives had sold around 4500 of these AMAG scooters, many of which were even exported to France or England. Production moved to Achilles-Werke, Weikert & Co. K. G., in Wilhelmshaven-Langewerth, Germany, in the spring of 1953, but the firm was sold to an English company soon after.
